our task in this project was to design a mediterranean research institute in the area of the fortification “castell de montjuïc”. the new structure bridges over the atrium of the fortress and generates thereby a connection between the city of barcelona and the sea. the diagonal layout of the bridge in both the horizontal and vertical section symbolises the prominent diagonals within the road network of barcelona. the institute harbours many scientific disciplines and provides multiple work areas including laboratories, meeting rooms, auditoriums and a library. at the exposed spot at the end of the body the building becomes two-storyed. meeting areas are located downstairs. In the upper floor the library is situated and opens out into a rooftop terrace, which also spans the atrium. the glass construction is encased with a copper lattice, which gives the building an overall homogenous face and separates it optically from the existing site. therefore, the user can experience nearly unobstructed views on the city. furthermore it serves as a sunscreen.
